What Are The Rigid Corrugated Plastic Sheets?

Rigid Corrugated Plastic Sheets are heavy-duty, high-density polypropylene (PP) sheets with a hollow, fluted structure that provides better stiffness and flatness than standard corrugated plastic sheets.

Think of them as the “heavy-duty version” of regular corrugated plastic sheets— they don’t bend, warp under load, or change shape in different temperatures.

Rigid corrugated plastic sheets: in-depth analysis from materials to applications

What we know about rigid corrugated plastic sheets mostly stays at the basic level of “what it is”, “what types are there”, and “where it is used”. But truly knowledgeable procurement and engineers care far more than that. They want to know: how does the rigidity of this board come about? What key indicators should I focus on in different application scenarios? What factors can affect performance during long-term use?

In this article, we will discuss from these professional perspectives.

The source of rigidity: it’s not just about “thickening.”

Many people think that rigid corrugated plastic sheets are just a slightly thicker ordinary hollow board. It’s actually not that simple. Rigidity is determined by three factors:

1. The density of the raw material

The density of ordinary hollow boards is usually between 250 and 700g/m ², while the density of rigid boards can reach 700 and 3000g/m ². The higher the density, the more polypropylene molecules per unit area, and the harder and more pressure-resistant the board naturally becomes.

The key point is: not all manufacturers can produce high-density boards always. The higher the density, the higher the requirements for the extrusion effect – temperature range, screw speed, and cooling speed. Any problem in any link can result in uneven density of the board and local softening or warping.

Our factory is able to produce boards with a density of 3000g/m ² because we have 16 fully automated production lines, each equipped with an intelligent temperature control system and online thickness detector, controlling the density and thickness errors of the entire board within ± 5%.

2. Corrugated structure

The “I-shaped” or “M-shaped” structure of corrugated board is another source of rigidity. It likes I-beams in architecture – achieving maximum bending strength.

But the corrugated structures of different manufacturers are different:

Ordinary corrugated: large spacing, thin wall, average rigidity

Tight corrugated: small spacing, thick wall, stronger rigidity

Strengthening rib corrugated: adding reinforcing ribs at key stress points, suitable for load-bearing scenarios

Our rigid board adopts a design of tight corrugated and locally reinforced ribs, which ensures lightweight while maximizing bending strength.

3. Molding process

The rigidity of the board is also closely related to the cooling after forming. If uneven cooling occurs, internal stress will lead to warping. That’s why some boards are flat when they are first bought and start bending after a few days.

Our production line adopts a multi-stage cooling system, which allows the sheet to cool slowly and evenly after extrusion, minimizing internal stress to the greatest extent possible. The board made in this way is flat when it leaves the factory and remains flat even after one year.

Key performance indicators: What should be paid attention to when purchasing?

Many purchases only consider thickness and price, but this is far from enough. The following indicators determine whether the board is ok for you:

1. Flexural Strength

This indicator determines whether the board will bend under stress. The unit is MPa (megapascals).

Ordinary hollow board: bending strength of about 15-25MPa

Rigid corrugated plastic sheet: bending strength can reach 30-50MPa

How to measure? Simple method: Stand the board at both ends and hang a heavy object in the middle to see if it bends. A more professional, universal material testing machine can be used.

2. Impact Strength

This indicator determines whether the board will crack when suddenly impacted. The unit is kJ/m ².

Ordinary hollow board: impact strength of about 5-10kJ/m ²

Rigid corrugated plastic sheet: impact strength can reach 15-25kJ/m ²

Why is it important? If you are working on building floor protection, workers may drop materials, and boards with insufficient impact resistance may slip through and fail to provide protection.

3. Heat Deformation Temperature (HDT)

This indicator determines whether the board will soften at high temperatures. The unit is ℃.

Ordinary PP board: heat deformation temperature is about 80-100 ℃

Modified PP rigid board: hot deformation temperature can reach 120-140 ℃

Why is it important? If you place the board outdoors in summer, the ground temperature may reach 60-70 ℃. The ordinary boards will become soft and cause warping. And the board with high heat deformation temperature will be ok.

4. Surface Dyne Level

This indicator determines whether something can be printed on the surface of the board. The unit is mN/m.

Untreated PP board: Dain value of about 30-32mN/m, poor ink adhesion

Corona treatment of PP board: Dain value can reach 50-54mN/m, good ink adhesion

Why is it important? If you are making a billboard and need to print on the board, if the Dyn value is not enough, the ink will peel off and peel off. Our rigid boards undergo double-sided corona treatment before leaving the factory, with a stable Dyn value of over 50 to ensure printing quality.

Performance degradation in long-term use: an easily overlooked issue

Many purchasers only care about the performance of new boards. In fact, the service life of the board can be affected by the following factors:

1. UV aging

PP material will gradually degrade under ultraviolet irradiation, manifested as:

Surface becomes brittle and cracks

Color fading and yellowing

Decreased impact resistance strength

Solution: Choose UV-stabilized rigid board. We have added UV absorbers and light stabilizers to the raw materials to delay aging. If used outdoors, the UV-stabilized boards can be used 3-5 times longer than ordinary boards.

2. Temperature cycle

In different temperatures (such as from -20 ℃ in winter to 60 ℃ in summer), the board will experience repeated thermal expansion and contraction. If the internal stress of the board is not eliminated, it will gradually warp.

Solution: Choose sheets with low internal stress. Our multi-stage cooling process can minimize internal stress and maintain the stability of the board.

3.  The chemical corrosion

PP material itself is resistant to acid and alkali, but certain solvents such as toluene and acetone can cause it to swell or crack.

Solution: If your application scenario involves chemicals, please inform us, and we will try to improve the chemical resistance of the board.

The influence of processing technology on performance

The final product may be much worse for the same board with different processing methods.

1. Cutting method

Hand cutting: rough edges, prone to microcracks, affecting strength

Die cutting: Smooth edges, high precision, but high mold cost

CNC cutting: highest precision (± 0.5mm), suitable for various shapes, no mold cost

Our factory uses a horizontal flatbed die-cutting machine, combined with an intelligent photoelectric sensing device, which has high cutting accuracy, smooth edges, and no microcracks.

2. Welding method

Adhesive: Low strength, not resistant to aging, not recommended

Hot plate welding: high strength, but slow speed

Ultrasonic welding: high strength, fast speed, suitable for mass production

We use ultrasonic welding to make boxes, and the seam strength is close to that of the base material. We also do not use adhesives, which are environmentally friendly and odorless.

3. Bending method

Cold bending: prone to whitening and cracking at the bending point

Hot bending: requires heating, but maintains good strength at the bending point

Indentation bending: The crease is neat, and the strength loss is small

We use indentation bending technology, with neat creases and strength loss controlled within 10%.

Summary: Choose rigid corrugated board, don’t just look at thickness

Choosing rigid corrugated plastic sheets you need to concern ont only the products itself, you also need to choose a partner who can understand your application, control material formulation, and ensure processing quality.

Our factory controls the entire process ourselves. You just need to tell us your requirements, and leave the rest to us.
